Let’s start with the CHAMPIONS: I expect Man City to retain the title.
I expect them to just repeat last season’s success. They’ve made one marquee signing in Jack Grealish and could still potentially get Harry Kane as well which makes them the clear favourites. Although I think they’ll win it again I don’t expect it to be as easy. More teams will put pressure on them and the race will be tighter compared to last season when they just remained consistently miles ahead of the rest. I feel the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have all improved and will put greater pressure on them but I think City still have the best depth and this will allow them just to nick it.
I predict the runners up to be Chelsea! This transfer window Chelsea haven’t bought that heavy but if I were a blues fan I’d be pretty alright with it considering the only star they bought to improve their team, was of course a new striker in the form of Romelu Lukaku for €115M. If I had one criticism of Chelsea last season with Tuchel, it was that they lacked goals and Werner wasn’t the finisher they thought he was, or perhaps, anticipated him to be but they have definitely got a proper striker now. Lukaku is just world class, I spoke about this signing in depth on my transfer update article — do go and check it out if you’re interested in the premier league transfer activity: https://eisha-acton.medium.com/transfer-talk-2-romelu-lukaku-to-chelsea-willock-to-newcastle-romero-to-spurs-with-eisha-1a23176d1c1e
I think Lukaku’s price tag will be justified especially because Chelsea were in the market for an elite striker and Lukaku was one of the easier ones to obtain. Other than that fault of lacking goals, Chelsea were pretty faultless last season I feel but I think their problem is their squad depth. I think it’s just a tad too light and one or two injuries to key players and I think they could fall apart. That being said, I think they’ll still do enough to earn a second placed finish!
Next up, I reckon Manchester United will finish third place. Yep. Let’s talk about this. Man United have gone big this summer. The Glazers have finally put their hands in their pockets and paid big money for elite players. I think the acquisition of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane puts out a statement to the whole league saying “we aren’t here to mess about” and I feel United fans haven’t been this excited for signings since Pogba arrived in 2016. Their starting eleven now competes with the best in Europe but I think their problem will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and their consistency. In my opinion I’m not convinced Ole is a “league” manager, I think he’s more of a “cup” manager. I feel in ways he’s more suited to a knockout competition, not a league season over 38 games. Man United will still challenge but I feel there will be a period where they lose a bit of form and ultimately this will cost them but I do expect them to secure at least third or fourth place.
I predict Liverpool to finish in fourth place! I think they’ve gone very minimal this transfer window and only added Ibrahima Konaté to their squad. Klopp has come out and said this week that “You can’t buy our togetherness” and that “You can’t buy Anfield”. He does have a point, Liverpool this season will have a fully fit Virgil Van Dijk which is almost like a new signing and a big help for them is the fact that fans will be back and a packed out Anfield will help drive the team on but I don’t think it’ll be enough to reclaim the title.
Right, fifth place I’m going for… Leicester! I think they’ve had a decent transfer window, Patson Daka from Salzburg for £23M, Boubakary Soumaré from Lille for £17M, Yannik Vestergaard has apparently been agreed today (the fee is currently unknown) and Ryan Bertrand on a free, both from Southampton. They have reinforced their squad and they just missed out on top 4 last season due to the final game and unfortunately I think they will have the same fate as the other teams have strengthened so much that it’s unlikely that they’ll be ahead of Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United or Man City but if they do manage to do it then it’ll be a commendable achievement by Rodgers and his team.
Lastly, I predict Tottenham to finish sixth place. I think they’ve quietly had a good window and gone about their business very well actually. Pier Luigi Gollini on loan is a very good backup or even starter for Hugo Lloris this season, Cristian Romero for 50million pounds was needed and undoubtedly improves their defence. Also another bit of smart business — Bryan Gill, a young pacy quick footed Spanish they signed from from Sevilla for around £21million pounds. I feel like their window has gone under the radar due to all the speculation surrounding Harry Kane. Of course, it’s a given that if Spurs want a chance at top 4 then they need to keep Kane.. I think they’re capable of securing 5th or 6th place without him. They still have some good players — the likes of Heung Min Son, Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Sergio Reguilón. All of this makes for an okay team and I think they’ll secure Europa League.
Now for some relegation talk. First up, I’m not sure Norwich will survive. Losing someone like Emi Buendia, yes when the money comes for him you sell him but when someone that influential on your creativity leaves then as a team - he’s leaving a huge void. I don’t think they have plugged that gap. Billy Gilmour will definitely help but he’s deeper than Buendia, Todd Cantwell is good and will only get better but where will Norwich rely on goals? Teemu Pukki is their only scoring threat. To avoid the same fate as last time around, I read that said Pukki will have to score more than the 11 goals he got in his first season in the Premier League. Can he sustain that level of consistency throughout the season? I’m not so sure. Josh Sargent and Milot Rashica aren’t Premier League proven - they’ll have to play ruthlessly to save the Canaries from another violent relegation back to the Championship.
The second team I see getting related this season is quite a rogue choice but hear me out, I’m going for Southampton. They concede a lot of goals and selling Vestergaard certainly won’t help that problem. Getting rid of Danny Ings and replacing him with Adam Armstrong from Blackburn puts massive pressure on him to carry the load Ings was carrying and also the Saints squad is very light. Valentino Livramento is an interesting signing from Chelsea’s u-23s but I don’t know how much he’ll help them and if he can make that much of an impact. The main issue is how shallow I feel their squad is and the fact they get so many injuries each season for some reason I think this looks it’lll be their downfall and they will go down unfortunately, of course I could be totally wrong here.
The final team is always the hardest to choose between but the 3 candidates I’d say are at biggest risk of relegation are Brentford, Crystal Palace and Watford. It’s very very close but my gut feeling is telling me Watford. They were very solid defensively last year in the Championship, keeping 23 clean sheets but sometimes they struggled for goals and that’s my worry with them. Ismaïla Sarr was their top scorer last year and at a push I can see him reach 15 goals but I’d say realistically he’ll get about 10. I know it’s preseason but they did play Crystal Palace in a friendly and they lost 3–1 and that doesn’t fill me with confidence so for that reason I’m picking Watford.
Now let’s take a look at the individual awards and try to predict who will win golden boot, golden glove, be the top assister and young player of the year.
For the GOLDEN BOOT I’m backing Romelu Lukaku to win it as his first season back in the Premier League after a while. He’s been on fire for Inter Milan ever since joining and even broke some of Christiano Ronaldo’s records while playing there which shows how reliable he’s been. He’s joining a Chelsea team which is crying out for a finisher as they create quite a few chances and that’s just what they got in Lukaku. I think it’ll be close between Lukaku and Kane but I feel Kane will perhaps get an injury and that’s when Lukaku will go in front.
For the GOLDEN GLOVE I predict it’ll go to Alisson Becker. Last season wasn’t his best season. He was quite shaky and made a few catastrophic errors but this season I expect him to be more himself, especially with his full defence in front of him. The reintroduction of Virgil Van Dijk back into the starting eleven should help Allison keep some more clean sheets and I do think he will beat Ederson to the golden glove.
I expect the TOP ASSISTER to be Bruno Fernandes! This one won’t be going to Kevin De Bruyne this year. With no striker bought before the start of the season, I can’t see De Bruyne dropping another 15 plus assists this season but I can see Bruno doing it. Fernandes does have the likes of Cavani, Rashford, Greenwood, Martial, Sancho; all these people around him who can finish and score goals and Bruno is heavily involved in the creative side of United so I do expect him to be heavily involved in the goals, just like he was last season.
I predict the YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON to be Mason Greenwood. I think it’s Greenwoods time to shine once again and this time I expect him to have a stellar season. The arrival of Sancho means that he can play in his natural position, as a striker, and with all the creativity like I mentioned earlier and add in Greenwood’s two footedness, it’s a dangerous combo and one that is bound to produce goals and which will in my opinion make him the best youngster in the Premier League.
Well, there’s my big prediction, of course this could all be wrong but that’s what my gut tells me — what do you reckon? Comment below with your predictions too. Thanks for reading, do check out Kitbag.com in the link below to shop all their new season kits:
